Default Turkish Invasion of Syria

So Turkey has invaded Syria, whatever their reasons are it is clearly an offensive designed to gain more territory. Maybe Turkey have aims to reclaim the territories they controlled for a thousand years ago as part of the Ottoman Empire?

The US has made a meal of this and now we will see Trumps true abiity to deal with foreign policy. Russia is backing Assad so lets see what NATO will do about this if anything.

Default Re: Turkish Invasion of Syria

My opinion:

NATO will do absolutely nothing. Turkey has been stepping away from the alliance and the Europe and siding with Russia in some defense matters (like weapon purchases and etc). Also, the aggressor in this context is Turkey itself. NATO would only feel obliged to help if things go sour and Turkey starts losing its own territory, but even in that situation I don't think the action would be fast, since nearly everyone inside alliance seems to be against Erdogan's move (the US Congress is even trying to push sanctions, because the main targets in this situation are the Kurds, that, despite Trump's action, are still allies of the US).

As for the Kurds, they are siding with Syria and Russia (although I don't expect it to last, since they have territorial claims in Syria). And, for Russia, Syria's integrity seems to be more important than Turkey's defense market.

The biggest losers in this situation are the Kurds and the US. The former for losing its territory and being targeted by Turkey, and the latter for losing its credibility among its allies, because what Trump did was a flagrant treason, leaving an ally alone when it needed the US the most.

Ah! And, personally, I see that offensive as a move from Erdogan to show power, because there was no real need for invading. The argument that he wanted to send part of the refugees back to Syria isn't, in my opinion, enough to justify a large scale invasion. Turkey already had control of segments of the syrian territory along the border...
